“We took sweet counsel together, and walked unto the house of God in company.” Psalms 55:14. Our sound system was unable to record last Sunday’s sermon because of a piece that went missing in the headset, so I am summarizing the points of the sermon titled “The Sweetest Thing.” There are so many things that can happen for us in our lives that would give us a feeling of ecstasy and would take us to cloud 9. However, my testimony is that the sweetest thing that can possibly happen is for a Christian to fall in love with the Lord Jesus Christ and his local church, and want nothing more than for Jesus Christ to come back in an event called the Rapture of the Church.
II Corinthians 2:15 states that “For we are unto God a sweet savour of Christ, in them that are saved, and in them that perish.” In my readings of Exodus, Leviticus and Numbers lately, the common phrase “it will be a sweet smelling savor unto the Lord” has a parallel in the New Testament in this verse. Our lives as believers goes up to God as a sweet smelling savor. Even to the lost, many of them, while some may hate us, they respect us, and know inherently that we are very important to the community. We have been made a sweet savor to them.
Revelation 10:8-10 recounts how an angel told the Apostle John to eat the the little book (representing the Holy Bible) and immediately, it would taste sweet in the mouth, and later on, it would become bitter in the belly. The bitterness has taken hold of so many Christians for much longer than it should have. Yes, following Christ and serving him will cost you friends, acquaintances, and may hurt your comfort level, among other things, but staying the course and picking up where you left off will help you to regain that sweet, sweet spirit.
Revelation 3:10-11 reminds us to hold fast to those things that we need to hold fast to, namely the word of God. Today, the Philadelphian church period is represented by its book (the King James Bible) and its songs and music (the hymnal). Both are mocked today by many professing Christians and are being abandoned by just as many ministers. The Lord is coming quickly, and holding onto those things will assure us that we don’t lose our CROWN.
This crown is mentioned in II 4:8. It is the crown of loving his appearance. Do you want Jesus Christ to come back? Are you ready to see the Lord Jesus Christ in, say, 5 minutes? If the answer is no, then you need to make sure that you figure out what is wrong. If your answer is yes, then praise the Lord. Let’s work, for the night is coming in which we will not be able to work.
